Prayerful Intuition and Smart Investing: Using All of Your God-Given Gifts
Friend, most of us were taught to make investment decisions with the analytical, fact-based side of our brain. “Stick to the numbers,” we’re told. “Don’t let emotion get in the way.”
That’s good advice as far as it goes — but it’s incomplete. As conservative Christians, we have access to something far better: prayerful wisdom and the quiet leading of the Holy Spirit. God gave us both a mind for numbers and a heart that can sense His direction. Why not use all the tools He’s provided?
It takes practice to balance clear analysis with prayerful intuition, but it’s one of the most valuable skills you can develop as you work to rescue your retirement and build a legacy that honors the Lord.
Why Prayerful Intuition Matters in Retirement Planning
Warren Buffett has said he simply “knows” a good investment when he sees it. I believe that knowing often comes from years of experience — and, for believers, from the gentle guidance God gives when we ask and listen.
The Bible tells us in James 1:5 that if any of us lacks wisdom, we should ask God, who gives generously. That includes wisdom for our finances and our future.
How to Develop and Use Prayerful Intuition
1. Create quiet space to listen. The Lord’s voice is rarely loud. Find peaceful moments — an early morning walk, coffee on the porch, or time alone with your Bible. Pray specifically for wisdom about your investments and retirement plans. Count your blessings and invite the Lord into the decision.
2. Combine facts with faith. First, do the analytical work. Gather the numbers, review the risks, compare options. Narrow your choices to two or three solid possibilities. Then bring those options before the Lord and ask for His peace or direction.
3. Learn to recognize true intuition vs. emotion. Emotion usually brings a strong physical reaction — excitement, fear, or pressure. Prayerful intuition often feels like a quiet “knowing” or sense of peace. It’s neutral and clear, even if the answer isn’t what you hoped for.
4. Practice daily. Start small. When you’re choosing between two simple things (what to wear, what to order), quietly ask the Lord and follow the first clear answer. The more you use this muscle in everyday life, the stronger it becomes when bigger retirement or investment decisions come along.
5. Ask simple, honest questions. After you’ve done your homework, pray questions like:
“Is this a wise investment?”
“Does this align with how You want me to steward what You’ve given me?”
“Is now the right time?”
“Lord, give me peace or close the door.”
Simple questions usually bring simple, clear answers.
A Word of Balance and Caution
Prayerful intuition is powerful, but it should never replace sound analysis or wise counsel. Use both. Gather the facts, seek advice from trusted professionals, then ask God for the wisdom to choose well.
Remember, intuition is shaped by our past experiences and desires. It’s not infallible. That’s why we test everything against Scripture. God will never lead us to do anything that violates His commandments or harms others. Ask in Jesus’ name and listen for a message that reflects His love, truth, and goodness.
The Real Goal
Using prayerful intuition alongside clear thinking isn’t about getting rich quick. It’s about faithful stewardship — making decisions that bring peace in your senior years and allow you to leave a godly legacy for your family, your church, or ministries like Mickey’s House.
When the numbers look reasonable and you also have that quiet sense of peace from the Lord, you can move forward with confidence.
