Let your friends and family know you're available for a new opportunity.

 

  • Tell them specifically what skills you have and the types of positions that fit your skills. Encourage them to send the email on to everyone they know as well.

 

Put an ad in the newspaper.

 

  • Instead of just answering ads, put a "job seeking ad" out there. Put an ad in Craigslist. There are tons of free classifieds online – use them!

 

Hang signs around town.

 

  • You've seen those signs on telephone poles that declare, "We Buy Houses." It could just as easily read, "Great Salesman Available For Hire."

 

Drop off your resume personally.

 

  • Don't just email or fax, if anyone even has a fax number anymore, your resume.  Drop one off in person, as well.

 

  • If they have a fax number, fax your resume to companies that meet your specifications.

 

Use several marketing tools.

 

  • Post your resume everywhere you can online. Join Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Start a blog, follow industry blogs, and make posts with a link to your resume.

 

Cold call businesses.

 

  • Call and ask for the HR department and see what you can make happen. Find the name of someone at the company via LinkedIn and ask for them!

Get business cards printed that state you're looking for a job.

 

  • Include your occupation of choice, name, phone, email, and a link to your resume.

 

Think outside the box.

 

  • Be creative and you may garner the attention of your next boss.

 

While the conventional means of finding a job are here to stay, responding to job postings and newspaper ads are hardly the only game in town. By utilizing some unique ways of finding that next job, your odds will improve dramatically and the competition will be less.

The more lines you throw in the water, the more likely you are to catch something. Also, 95% of all applicants for a position look the same after a while. Doing something unique makes you much more likely to stand out. So be different and see what you can make happen!
